A letter from our Scholarship Chair:

The True Gentleman Scholarship was started by the University of Evansville’s local Sigma Alpha Epsilon (∑AE chapter as a way to reward undergraduate men who possessed the strengths of character that are held most sacred to the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. The national fraternity was founded in 1856 with a focus on friendship and academic integrity. Today, Sigma Alpha Epsilon has more than two-hundred chapters across the country and is one of the largest fraternities in the world. University of Evansville’s ∑AE chapter is dedicated to these ideals and offers three $250 scholarships every fall to any eligible undergraduate at the University of Evansville as a way to alleviate some of the cost that goes into getting an education at a private college.

Every member of ∑AE has devoted to memory and pledged to live by the words of “The True Gentleman”, which serves as the guiding creed for the national fraternity and its members. “The True Gentleman” defines the values that ∑AE holds highest and the fraternity members maintain that living out “The True Gentleman” should be their greatest goal.

The True Gentleman is the man whose conduct proceeds from good will and an acute sense of propriety, and whose self-control is equal to all emergencies; who does not make the poor man conscious of his poverty, the obscure man of his obscurity, or any man of his inferiority or deformity; who is himself humbled if necessity compels him to humble another; who does not flatter wealth, cringe before power, or boast of his own possessions or achievements; who speaks with frankness but always with sincerity and sympathy; whose deed follows his word; who thinks of the rights and feelings of others, rather than his own; and who appears well in any company, a man with whom honor is sacred and virtue safe.

To be eligible for the True Gentleman Scholarship you must currently be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student at the University of Evansville and not be an affiliate of any Greek organization. Accepting this scholarship in no way obligates the recipient to join ∑AE in the future. You must complete the scholarship application form including a one page essay of what it means to be a True Gentleman in your own words, and you must complete an interview with the University of Evansville’s ∑AE Scholarship Chair by September 8th. You can reach the Scholarship Chair via email at ad237@evansville.edu.

Best of luck,
